Phillies promote Cedeno, designate Jimenez

CINCINNATI -- The Phillies on Friday selected the contract of journeyman infielder Ronny Cedeno from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Left-hander Cesar Jimenez has been designated for assignment.

"Middle infield help," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said simply about Cedeno's promotion. "A right-handed bat. He's been swinging the bat really well. Just another infielder that can play shortstop."

The Phillies brought Cedeno, 31, to Spring Training as a non-roster invitee, but released him March 25. They re-signed him to a Minor League contract March 30. He was hitting .286/.327/.367 with one home run and 20 RBIs in 42 games for Lehigh Valley.

In 21 games since May 11, he has hit .392/.423/.527.

Cedeno has spent parts of nine seasons in the Majors with the Cubs, Mariners, Pirates, Mets, Astros and Padres. The utility infielder has compiled a .246/.289/.354 batting line with 40 homers and 239 RBIs in his big league career.

Jimenez, 29, pitched two scoreless innings over two appearances with the Phils this season.
