PHILADELPHIA -- Top Phillies prospect J.P. Crawford underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Wednesday to remove a "loose body." The team said Crawford will rest for the next four weeks but will otherwise have a normal offseason.
Crawford is expected to be ready to compete by the beginning of Spring Training.
MLBPipeline.com considers Crawford, 21, the Majors' No. 2 overall prospect. He started the season with Double-A Reading before being promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He hit .244 with 11 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 30 RBIs and a .647 OPS in 385 plate appearances with the IronPigs. He walked 42 times and struck out on 59 occasions.
Crawford will be in big league camp next spring, if everything goes according to plan, but Freddy Galvis is expected to be the Opening Day shortstop.
Phillies physician Michael Ciccotti performed the surgery.
