Adams placed on DL with biceps tendinitis

PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies setup man Mike Adams was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday with biceps tendinitis in his throwing arm.

It is the second DL stint of the season for the right-hander, who missed more than two weeks in May with a strained back. Adams, 34, did not speak to reporters before Saturday's game against the Mets.

The Phillies signed Adams to a two-year, $12 million deal in the offseason, but he has not been efficient. He has noted that his arm had been giving him trouble recently. In 11 games since returning from his back injury, he had a 5.40 ERA with five walks and four strikeouts in 10 innings. He is 1-4 with a 3.96 ERA in 28 appearances on the season.

Right-hander J.C. Ramirez was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Adams' spot in the bullpen. In order for Ramirez to fit on the 40-man roster, the Phillies designated infielder Michael Martinez for assignment. Martinez saw limited action in two separate Major League stints this season.

When Adams was out in May, lefty Antonio Bastardo assumed the setup role. Bastardo and closer Jonathan Papelbon are the only two active bullpen members who did not start the season in the Minors. Phillies relievers have combined for a 4.55 ERA, second-worst in the majors.

With Adams out and many new faces in the bullpen, Justin De Fratus said he and other relievers need to have the same mindset when they take the mound, regardless of when it happens.

"Every time we go out and pitch, the goal is to go out and hang a zero," De Fratus said. "It doesn't matter what inning it's in, the goal is to hang a zero. It's going to be tough missing a guy like Mike Adams, but we're confident enough to get the job done."
