Phillies trade Mayberry Jr. to Toronto

The Phillies have traded outfielder John Mayberry Jr. to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for minor league third baseman Gustavo Pierre, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced tonight.

Mayberry, 30, batted .213 with six home runs and 21 RBI in 63 games (29 starts) for the Phillies this season and had recently been on a rehab assignment with triple-A Lehigh Valley for left wrist inflammation. As a pinch hitter this season, he hit .391 (9-23) with two doubles, three home runs and 11 RBI. Mayberry was originally acquired by the Phillies in November of 2008 from the Texas Rangers and has spent his entire major league career with the team, batting .242 with 52 home runs and 169 RBI in 500 games.

Pierre split this season between single-A Dunedin and double-A New Hampshire. He batted a combined .260 with 24 doubles, eight home runs and 43 RBI in 116 games. The 22-year-old is a native of the Dominican Republic and will be assigned to the double-A Reading roster.
