PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies traded right-hander Severino Gonzalez to the Marlins on Tuesday. They will receive a player to be named or cash.
Gonzalez, 24, was designated for assignment on Thursday to make room for outfielder Michael Saunders on the 40-man roster. He went 1-2 with a 5.60 ERA in 27 appearances last season. He posted a 7.92 ERA in seven starts in 2015.
Gonzalez became a long reliever for the Phillies in 2016 as a handful of starting-pitching prospects surpassed him in the system.
