ARLINGTON -- The Angels unveiled their new-look lineup Friday, with second baseman Brandon Phillips batting leadoff and left fielder Justin Upton hitting third in the club's 10-9 series-opening loss to the Rangers at Globe Life Park.
It didn't take long for Phillips and Upton to make their presence felt, as the newcomers combined to reach base five times, helping the Angels rally from a five-run deficit before the Rangers broke a 9-9 tie by scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning.
"The lineup looked good," shortstop Andrelton Simmons said. "We put up really good at-bats, scored a lot of runs. They just outscored us late that last inning. We didn't get that big break, but we put up a fight. That lineup showed what it can do."

In the first inning, Phillips and Michael Trout drew back-to-back walks off left-hander Cole Hamels before advancing to second and third on Upton's groundout. Jose Pujols then doubled to put the Angels on the board, 2-0.

"The lineup was nice," said Phillips, who landed in Dallas less than four hours before the game. "I was very surprised I was hitting leadoff, but I can handle it. I feel like I'm very versatile. I can hit anywhere in the lineup, and whatever they want me to do, I'll do."
The top of the Angels' lineup was back at work in the fifth, when Trout singled with two outs and moved to third on Upton's double. Pujols followed with a two-run single, trimming the Rangers' lead to 6-4.

Despite their offensive contributions, Phillips and Upton also committed miscues on the field. In the first, Phillips took too long to field a grounder, allowing the fleet-footed Delino DeShields to get an infield single. The next inning, Upton dropped a routine fly ball off the bat of Shin-Soo Choo, leading to an unearned run for the Rangers.
"I think Brandon just set up, and DeShields hustled down the line and beat that ground ball," manager Mike Scioscia said. "In left field, with Justin, it was twilight, but I think he was just trying to get the ball out of his glove too quick to get the ball to the cut-off man, and he just bobbled it and missed it. But we're going to keep going. We didn't make a couple plays tonight, but we swung the bats well, got back in the game. We just couldn't get the hit at the end."
Worth noting
• Escobar (right oblique strain) was brought back from his rehab assignment after feeling stiffness in his back during a Minor League game Wednesday. Scioscia said Escobar will be re-evaluated and remains day to day.
• Five players joined the Angels on Friday as part of the first wave of September callups: infielder Nolan Fontana, catcher Carlos Perez, left-hander Jason Gurka and right-handers Noel Salas and Noe Ramirez.
• The Angels transferred right-hander JC Ramirez (elbow strain) to the 60-day disabled list Friday, effectively ending his regular season.
• As promised, Trout purchased season tickets to the Phoenix Suns for C.J. Cron after he won a bet by hitting two home runs on Tuesday. Trout said they're located at center court, a couple rows up.
