Pipeline preview: Swanson, Mengden headline day's action

May 2nd, 2016

Here's a look at top prospects to watch in today's Minor League action:
Hitter to watch: Dansby Swanson (Braves' No. 1)
Swanson, No. 6 on the Top 100, was promoted to Double-A over the weekend, and he made an immediate impact in his debut by hitting a go-ahead two-run home run to power Mississippi past Jacksonville, 3-2. The 2015 No. 1 overall Draft pick has been on a tear to begin his first full professional season, hitting .341/.446/.565 with 15 extra-base hits, seven steals and more walks (15) than strikeouts (13) in 23 games between Class A Advanced Carolina and Mississippi. On Monday, Swanson will look to extend his hitting streak to six games when Mississippi takes on Jacksonville at 7:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV.

Pitcher to watch: Daniel Mengden (A's No. 14)
Mengden will be making his Triple-A debut on Monday when he takes the mound for Nashville against the Iowa Cubs at 7:35 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV. The 23-year-old righty, acquired from Houston in the Scott Kazmir trade last July, is moving up to the Minors' top level after going 2-0 with a 0.78 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 23 innings for Double-A Midland. Three of Mengden's four starts for RockHounds were of the scoreless variety, and he fanned exactly eight hitters in all three outings.

Duel of the day:
Stephen Gonsalves (Twins' No. 6) vs. Austin Gomber (Cardinals' No. 17)
Gonsalves allowed three earned runs on six hits in his season debut for Class A Advanced Fort Myers on April 7. Since then, the 21-year-old lefty has allowed one earned run on six hits in 19 innings over his past three starts, giving him an impressive 1.44 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP in 25 frames this season. Gomber, meanwhile, is 3-0 in his past three turns for Palm Beach, during which he's yielded two earned runs in 16 2/3 innings. The two southpaws are set to duel Monday when Palm Beach hosts Fort Myers at 6:30 p.m. ET.
