Pipeline preview: McKinney, Sheffield to shine in Yanks' system

August 5th, 2016

Here's a look at top prospects to watch Friday in Minor League action:
Mejia streak watch: Indians No. 4 prospect Francisco Mejia aims to extend his 46-game hit streak as Lynchburg faces Salem at 7:05 p.m. ET.
Hitter to watch: (Yankees' No. 16), Trenton vs. Harrisburg (7 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Coming off his best offensive game since he was traded to the Yankees, McKinney will look to parlay that into another strong showing. The outfielder went 3-for-4 with two RBIs on Thursday and is hitting .320 through his first seven games with his new club.

Pitcher to watch: (Yankees' No. 7), Tampa vs. Daytona (7 p.m. ET)
Sheffield, the No. 92 overall prospect, is looking to make a strong first impression with his new club after being dealt to the Yankees at the trade deadline. The lefty comes to the Yankees' organization with a 3.59 ERA in 19 starts this season and has given up three earned runs or fewer in six consecutive outings.

Duel of the Day: Jon Harris (Blue Jays' No. 6) vs. Kodi Medeiros (Brewers' No. 13), Dunedin vs. Brevard County (6:35 p.m. ET)
Harris is looking to begin August the same way he finished July. The Blue Jays' prospect gave up one run in 7 2/3 innings the last time he took the mound and gave up two earned runs or fewer in five of six July starts. The right-hander was promoted to Class A Advanced on July 23 and is 0-1 in two starts.

After a string of excellent starts, Medeiros has been hit hard over his last two appearances. The lefty has given up six earned runs on eight hits over his last 7 1/3 innings. However, from late May to early July, the 20-year-old had a stretch in which he allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of seven starts. He's lacked consistency at times, but Medeiros has also shown he has what it takes to get batters out.
