WASHINGTON -- Andrew McCutchen was scratched from the Pirates' starting lineup about an hour and a half before the first pitch of their second-to-last game of the season on Saturday night at Nationals Park.
McCutchen, slated to bat third and play center field in what would have been his 154th start of the year, was sidelined due to left foot discomfort. McCutchen injured his foot while fouling a ball off of it during the Pirates' 6-1 loss to the Nationals on Friday night.
"He came out today scheduled to go then started running around on the field and it didn't get well," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "I don't think there's anything outside of the fact that it was uncomfortable today."
With McCutchen out, Pittsburgh moved Starling Marte to center field, bumped up Josh Bell to the third spot in the lineup and inserted Jordan Luplow in left field, batting cleanup for the first time in his young Major League career.
It is unclear if McCutchen will return for Sunday afternoon's regular-season finale against the Nats.
After his torrid June and July gave way to an August slump at the plate, McCutchen has enjoyed a solid September, slashing .286/.340/.500 in 25 games.

In two days, he will enter a potentially uncertain offseason, professionally. The Pirates have not publicly committed to picking up or declining his $14.5 million option for next year, and the winter may bring another round of trade rumors involving the face of Pittsburgh's franchise.
Coaching decisions TBD
Hurdle did not reveal whether all the club's coaches will return next season, but he praised their work as a staff.
Hurdle and general manager Neal Huntington recently received four-year contract extensions, and pitching coach Ray Searage agreed earlier this month to a two-year extension, as first reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
After finishing 78-83 last season, the Pirates dismissed third-base coach Rick Sofield and moved both Nick Leyva and Brad Fischer into the front office to make room for base coaches Joey Cora and Kimera Bartee and bench coach Tom Prince.
"I anticipate having that all put together for everybody, the answers to all that, right after the season," Hurdle said. "Our coaches have worked extremely hard. We've gotten some better results in some areas than others. We're all connected.
"I like our staff. I like the men. I have always appreciated continuity, and Neal and I are having those ongoing conversations right now."

Josh Harrison, on the disabled list with a fractured left hand, did not travel with the Pirates to Washington this weekend -- and for good reason. Harrison remained at home to be with his wife, Brittney, who gave birth to the couple's second daughter, Kinsli Rose, late Friday night.
