Pirates lose challenge on close play at first

PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates lost a challenge in the top of the eighth inning against the Dodgers on Wednesday on a safe call at first base.

With Yasiel Puig on first, Dee Gordon hit a line drive to third baseman Josh Harrison, who caught the ball and fired to first in an attempt to double off Puig. A pinch-hitter appearing for the first time in the series, Puig slid head-first back to the bag and was ruled safe on the field. The play stood after review.

Puig led off the inning with a walk against reliever Justin Wilson, who took over for Francisco Liriano after he allowed one run in seven innings.

Wilson erased the runner later in the inning, getting Adrian Gonzalez to ground into a double play.
