Alvarez hits career-high 31st home run

Slugger was already fifth Pirate with 30 HRs in back-to-back years

SAN DIEGO -- Pedro Alvarez hit his league-leading 31st home run Monday at Petco Park, passing his career-best 30 long balls from last season. He is the fifth Pirates player to have back-to-back seasons with at least 30 homers.

Ralph Kiner (1947-1952), Willie Stargell (1970-'73), Brian Giles (1999-2002) and Jason Bay (2005-'06) are the other four players to accomplish the feat for Pittsburgh.
