Hughes recalled from Triple-A to replace Contreras

Right-hander will stand in for veteran, who was placed on bereavement list

PITTSBURGH -- Right-hander Jose Contreras was placed on the bereavement list one hour before Friday night's game by the Pirates, who recalled Jared Hughes from Triple-A Indianapolis to take his vacated seat in the bullpen.

Contreras suffered a death in his family and left PNC Park before the game against the Houston Astros.

Hughes was expected to reach the ballpark at some point during Friday night's game. The move returns him to the bullpen in which he was such a big part during his rookie season in 2012.

Hughes ranked among the Majors' top rookie relievers last season when he appeared in 66 games and had an ERA of 2.85. He struggled to a 4.61 ERA in 13 outings this season prior to being optioned at the end of April.

In Indianapolis, Hughes did not allow a run in six appearances and 6 2/3 innings, with seven strikeouts and three walks.
