PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates announced a pair of Minor League free-agent signings on Wednesday, bringing aboard left-hander Dan Runzler and right-hander Jason Stoffel and inviting both to Major League Spring Training camp.
Runzler, 31, pitched in 89 games for the Giants from 2009-12. The lefty reliever posted a 3.86 ERA in 72 1/3 innings, striking out 78 batters while walking 44 and allowing only two home runs.
Runzler has bounced around the Minors since then, even pitching for the independent Atlantic League Sugar Land Skeeters this past season. He posted a 1.95 ERA in 27 2/3 innings over 33 appearances in the Atlantic League after being released by the Twins in June.
Stoffel, 28, was a fourth-round Draft pick by the Giants in 2009 out of the University of Arizona. He has no Major League experience, having pitched in Double-A and Triple-A since 2011.
Stoffel went 3-5 with a 2.44 ERA and 24 saves between Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk in the Orioles' organization this past season. Stoffel posted the kind of lofty strikeout totals the Bucs typically look for, fanning 11.9 batters per nine innings in 2016, and 9.6 per nine in his Minor League career.
In eight Minor League seasons, Stoffel is 28-22 with a 3.34 ERA in 426 1/3 innings over 381 relief appearances.
