Pirates sign third round Draft pick Jon Sandfort

The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed right-handed pitcher Jon Sandfort, the club's third round selection in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made Joe DelliCarri, the Pirates Director of Amateur Scouting.

As a senior this year at Winter Springs (FL) High School, Sandfort posted an 8-1 record along with a 0.92 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 68.2 innings of work. He was also named a Rawlings third-team pre-season All-American this year and a Rawlings and Perfect Game pre-season Florida Regional High School Senior First Team entering 2012.

"The Pirates are excited to add the athletic and physical presence Jon Sandfort brings to the baseball field," said DelliCarri. "He possesses many positive traits needed to excel at pitching for a long time."

Sandfort has been assigned to the Gulf Coast League Pirates.

The Pirates have now signed 10 players from this year's draft.
