NEW YORK -- Chad Green's Major League career will officially begin Monday.
The 24-year-old, whom the Yankees acquired from the Tigers this offseason, will start Monday's series opener against the D-backs, taking over for Michael Pineda. Pineda is a healthy scratch and will start Tuesday, pushing back Nathan Eovaldi to Wednesday. All indications are that Ivan Nova will pitch on regular rest Thursday and CC Sabathia will come off the disabled list to pitch on Friday.
The Yankees' rotation was thrown out of whack when Luis Severino went on the 15-day DL with a triceps strain following his start Friday. Green, who was scheduled to start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, instead came up to the big league club to work as an extra arm out of the bullpen for the weekend. The Yankees never ended up using Green, however, keeping him available to pitch Monday.
Green, who posted a 1.22 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP over seven Triple-A starts this season, said he wasn't informed about the start until five or 10 minutes before he spoke to the media. 
"They just pulled me in the office," Green said. "The first thing they asked me is if I've ever hit before. I haven't hit since high school, so that should be interesting."
Playing under National League rules in Arizona will force Green, who said he doesn't even own a pair of batting gloves and has only taken batting practice a couple of times, to step up to the plate, which he said "should be fun." He seemed to have a similar attitude about pitching itself, saying that it's simultaneously exciting and nerve-wracking.
"Maybe a little bit of both," Green said. "It's nice knowing that I'm going to pitch tomorrow. But I'm also nervous because it's going to be my first time pitching up here."
