P.J. Carey Club Statement

The following statement from the Colorado Rockies Baseball Club is in response to the passing Friday of former Rockies Minor League manager and Major League coach, P.J. Carey.

Our entire organization grieves at the death of P.J. Carey.  We were deeply saddened to learn of P.J.’s passing on Friday evening.  He was a great husband, son, brother and friend to so many throughout our organization and the baseball community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Katherine, family, and to all of those whose lives were touched by P.J. over his life and 40-year career in professional baseball.

A former catcher, Carey started his playing career with the Philadelphia organization in 1972 before turning to coaching.  His Minor League managing career extended for 22 seasons – mostly at the Rookie or Short-Season A levels – between 1980 and 2006 and included time with Philadelphia, Seattle, Cincinnati and the Rockies.  A member of the Rockies organization from the inception in 1993, he managed six different teams during his time with Colorado.  Named the 1996 South Atlantic League Manager of the year, P.J. also earned Arizona Rookie League Manager of the year honors twice, in 1998 and 2000.  He served as the Rockies Major League bullpen coach for the 1997 season.  A member of the Los Angeles Dodger organization since 2007, he finished his career as the Dodgers’ Senior Advisor, Player Development.
