Red Sox reinstate right-handed pitcher Phillips Valdez from COVID-19-related injured list

Club Designates Outfielder Franchy Cordero for Assignment

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today reinstated right-handed pitcher Phillips Valdez from the COVID-19 Related Injured List. To make room for Valdez on the 40-man roster, the club designated outfielder Franchy Cordero for assignment.

The Red Sox’ 40-man roster is at 40.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Valdez, 29, made 28 appearances for the Red Sox this season, posting a 5.85 ERA (26 ER/40.0 IP) with 35 strikeouts. He was placed on the COVID-19 Related Injured List on September 12 and missed the remainder of the season. The right-hander also recorded a 3.94 ERA (7 ER/16.0 IP) in 17 games for Triple-A Worcester this season, striking out 20 batters and walking 14.

Cordero, 27, appeared in 48 games for the Red Sox this season, making 27 starts in left field, eight at first base, one in right field, and one at designated hitter. He hit .189 (24-for-127) with six doubles, one home run, and nine RBI for Boston. In 78 games for Worcester, Cordero batted .300 (86-for-287) with a .931 OPS, 13 home runs, and 56 RBI.
