Fielder surges in All-Star first-base race

Rangers slugger trails Miggy, Hosmer in closely contested position battle

Rangers first baseman Prince Fielder, who entered Monday first in the league in batting average and second in RBIs, made a monster leap into third place in the voting update for the 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot.

Fielder was not among the league's top five vote-getters in the first ballot release last week, but he has climbed ahead of the Yankees' Mark Teixeira and the Angels' Albert Pujols.

Fielder, who has 580,739 votes, trails Detroit's Miguel Cabrera (2,123,752) and Kansas City's Eric Hosmer (2,053,237). The first-base race is the closest American League battle.

Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre (412,404) held onto his fifth-place standing. The Royals' Mike Moustakas (2,385,024) is the leader.

Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- on their computers, tablets and smartphones until Thursday, July 2, at 11:59 p.m. ET. For the first time, voting is exclusively online, where fans may submit up to 35 ballots.
