Fielder to take his cuts in Home Run Derby

ARLINGTON -- Rangers first baseman Prince Fielder will bid for his third crown at the Gillette Home Run Derby presented by Head & Shoulders tonight at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

Fielder, the Home Run Derby champion in 2009 and 2012, will be the No. 7 seed and face No. 2 seed Todd Frazier of the Reds.

Although some players skip the Home Run Derby, Fielder has always been one to embrace it. This will be his sixth career Home Run Derby and his fourth in the past five years. He joins Ken Griffey Jr. (eight), Mark McGwire (seven), Sammy Sosa (six) and Barry Bonds (six) as the only players to participate at least six times.

"I don't know [why other players don't like it]. You'd have to ask them," Fielder said. "I like it. For one, my kids like it, so it's only right for me to like it, too."

Fielder also selected as an All-Star for the sixth time earlier this week. He is hitting .344 with 13 home runs and 50 RBIs this season. He is the first Rangers hitter to participate in the Derby since Nelson Cruz in 2009.

The annual showcase also features Chicago Cubs rookie third baseman Kris Bryant, Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson, Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado, Los Angeles Dodgers rookie outfielder Joc Pederson, Angels first baseman Albert Pujols and Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

The Derby will be broadcast live by ESPN and MLB.com beginning at 7 p.m. CT on Monday.
