Prospect Meyer effective with new changeup

ST. PETERSBURG -- Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony received positive reports about No. 3 prospect Alex Meyer's pitching performance for Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday night.

Meyer, ranked as the No. 27 overall prospect by MLB.com, tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up just three hits while tying a career high with 11 strikeouts against Pawtucket.

The biggest change from his outing is that he's now switched to a new changeup, as he's throwing a three-finger changeup he learned from reliever Deolis Guerra instead of a circle-changeup.

Meyer was reluctant to throw his changeup during Spring Training, but the Twins want the 6-foot-9 right-hander to mix it in more to go along with his plus-fastball and plus-breaking ball.

"It was really encouraging," Antony said. "He threw 15 changeups. He changed his grip. I think he's going to break that out and use it more in the games. So that's a positive thing. Obviously, he pitched well with 11 strikeouts and three walks. He was pretty dominant."
