Pair of Pirates hurlers set for Futures Game

No. 2 prospect Priester, No. 19 Contreras will join All-Star Week festivities

June 30th, 2021

A pair of right-handers will represent the Pirates in this year’s SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game at Coors Field on July 11, as part of All-Star Game festivities leading up to the 91st Midsummer Classic on July 13.

Quinn Priester, the club’s No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline (No. 37 overall), and Roansy Contreras, the club’s No. 19 prospect, will be on the National League roster. The Futures Game will be between the NL representatives and those from the American League this year, rather than the “U.S.” and “World” squads utilized in previous games.

The Pirates selected Priester, 22, 18th overall in the 2019 MLB Draft, and he’s excelled in his two seasons of pro ball so far, posting a 3.25 ERA over 18 appearances (17 starts) across three levels -- Rookie, Low-A West Virginia and High-A Greensboro -- with a summer at the Pirates’ alternate training site also under his belt. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound right-hander has a four-seam fastball that touches 98 mph, along with a sinking two-seamer, a plus curveball, a developing slider and a changeup.

Contreras, 21, was signed by the Yankees out of the Dominican Republic in 2016, and acquired by the Pirates in the deal that sent Jameson Taillon to New York in January. Contreras has pitched very well since joining the Pittsburgh organization, currently sporting a 2.00 ERA and a career-best 36 percent strikeout rate for Double-A Altoona. In four Minor League seasons, Contreras has an overall 3.06 ERA.

Frazier talks ASG vote

Adam Frazier is enjoying a breakout season in 2021, so much so that he’s in the mix to be the starting second baseman for the All-Star Game at Coors Field. He is one of three finalists at second base, currently leading in the voting for the position ahead of the Braves' Ozzie Albies and the Dodgers' Gavin Lux.

“It’s been a pretty good first half, I guess, though it’s not over yet,” Frazier said. “But to make that game, to start that game would be unbelievable, a dream come true.”

Frazier entered Wednesday’s series finale against the Rockies hitting .326/.395/.465 with only 37 strikeouts in 77 games. He’d like to make a return trip to Colorado in a couple of weeks, and so far, things are looking good. In Phase 1 of All-Star voting, Albies led the way, but Frazier has made a big jump in Phase 2 to take the lead. Phase 2 of voting ends Thursday at 2 p.m. ET, and the winners at each position will be announced Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Fans can vote by going to mlb.com/vote -- or vote on Google by searching "MLB All-Star vote" or "Vote," along with a player's name. You can vote daily on both platforms, including once per day on MLB.com.

Frazier isn’t getting caught up in the All-Star voting, preferring to focus instead on the next game. There is one thing he lets himself get caught up in, though.

“Mississippi State,” Frazier said, referring to his alma mater’s College World Series run. “Our games and their games. That’s what I’ve been worried about the past few days.”

Mississippi State was scheduled to play Vanderbilt in the third and deciding game of the 2021 College World Series Finals on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET.
