Devers, Ball among top prospect performers Thursday

Pair of Red Sox prospects lead Salem to tie Carolina League semifinals

Rafael Devers and Trey Ball led Class A Advanced Salem to a 5-1 win over Myrtle Beach, evening the Carolina League semifinals at 1-1.
Ball, the Red Sox's No. 14 prospect, limited the Pelicans to one earned run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings. The 22-year-old lefty fired 56 of his 95 pitches for strikes, walking two and striking out three.
Devers (Red Sox's No. 3, No. 18 overall) expanded Salem's lead to 2-0 with an RBI single in the third before putting the game away with a two-run homer in the fifth.
The 19-year-old third baseman is 3-for-8 in the series after finishing 2-for-4 on Thursday.
Boston's No. 8 prospect, Luis Alexander Basabe, also went 2-for-4 in the game and is 3-for-8 in the series.
The rest of the best performances from top prospects Thursday:
(Yankees' No. 2, No. 19 overall) played a big part in Class A Advanced Tampa's semifinal win over Dunedin. Torres, who hit .438 during the three-game series, went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored.
• Bradley Zimmer (Indians' No. 1, No. 27 overall) broke a 2-2 tie and helped even up the International League semifinals with a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh for Triple-A Columbus. Zimmer went 1-for-3 and is 2-for-6 in the series.

• Brent Honeywell (Rays' No. 2, No. 42 overall) threw well, but it wasn't enough as Double-A Montgomery lost to Jackson. The 21-year-old kept his team in the game with seven strong innings, striking out seven and allowing two runs on four hits.
• Kevin Newman (Pirates' No. 4, No. 44 overall) did his part offensively in Double-A Altoona's win over Akron in Game 2 of the Eastern League semifinals. Newman led off the game with a single and promptly came around to score, giving his team an early lead. The 23-year-old later doubled and finished 2-for-3.
• Double-A Jackson is up 2-0 in the Southern League semifinals and Tyler O'Neill (Mariners' No. 2, No. 64 overall) is a big reason why. After hitting a walk-off three-run homer in Game 1, O'Neill went deep again in Game 2. The right fielder went 2-for-4 in total as Jackson won 2-1.

• Francisco Mejia (Indians' No. 4, No. 91 overall) put together his 11th three-hit game in 104 total games, including the postseason, for Class A Advanced Lynchburg. The catching prospect hit a two-run homer in the third and finished 3-for-7 as the Hillcats won in 14 innings.
(Athletics' No. 20) drove in a trio of runs for Double-A Midland, going 2-for-4 in a loss. The second baseman had 71 RBIs in 129 games during the regular season, including four games with three or more RBIs.
• Patrick Weigel (Braves' No. 28) led Double-A Mississippi to a win with seven scoreless frames. The 22-year-old, who posted a 2.47 ERA in 25 games (24 starts) this season, fanned eight and gave up just three hits as the Braves tied the series at one game each.

"I just focused on executing pitches pitch by pitch," Weigel told MiLB.com. "I didn't really think ahead about what inning it was or how many strikeouts, I just focused on filling up the strike zone and getting ground balls for my teammates."
• Omar Estevez (Dodgers' No. 12) put together his ninth three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs as Class A Great Lakes won Game 1 of the Midwest League playoffs.
Mariners' No. 14 Zack Littell tossed a season-high 106 pitches, 75 strikes, as he led Class A Advanced Bakersfield to a win over San Jose. The right-hander also notched a season high for strikeouts with 11 as he gave up one run on four hits in 7 1/3 strong innings.
• Clay Holmes (Pirates' No. 11) helped Double-A Altoona even the series with 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball. Holmes threw 51 of his 98 pitches for strikes, struck out five and scattered four hits.
• Ryan O'Hearn (Royals' No. 8) is in the middle of a monster game for Double-A Northwest Arkansas. O'Hearn is 3-for-4 with a triple, two homers and two RBIs. However, the game was suspended due to rain in the top of the seventh and will resume Friday.

• Trey Amburgey (Yankees' No. 28) isn't known for his power -- he hit two homers in 68 games during the regular season -- but came through with a big homer for Class A Advanced Tampa. The left fielder, who finished 1-for-3, hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth that helped send Tampa to the Florida State League Finals.
