Rain washes out series opener against Twins

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game starting at 3:10 p.m. CT at Kauffman Stadium.

The pitching matchups will remain unchanged: Royals left-hander Will Smith versus Cole De Vries in the the first game and right-hander Luke Hochevar versus Twins right-hander Liam Hendriks.

The second game will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. However, in case of a quick opener, the second game would not start before the regular-scheduled time of 6:10 p.m. CT.

Fans holding tickets to Friday night's game can exchange them for any remaining game on the schedule, including Saturday's doubleheader.

Neither game will be televised by FOX Sports Kansas City. Friday night's scheduled telecast will be rescheduled for a later date.

The rain also washed out the Royals Hall of Fame induction of groundskeeper George Toma. That has not yet been rescheduled.

Rain started on Friday morning as a consequence of Hurricane Isaac and continued through the evening. The moisture brought relief to the drought-stricken Midwest.

Royals second baseman Johnny Giavotella has family in New Orleans, which was in the hurricane's path. He's been in touch with his parents.

"Everything's fine. They're still without power, but they're making do with the preparations they made and everything will be OK in the next few days," he said.

His aunt's restaurant, Gio's Pizza, has been closed because of the power outage, but she hoped to re-open on Saturday if the power returns.
