Arlington, Texas -- The Texas Rangers tonight announced that the club has acquired right-handed pitcher Tyrell Jenkins and minor league left-handed pitcher Brady Feigl from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for right-handed pitcher Luke Jackson.
Jenkins has been assigned from Atlanta's to Texas' major league roster, keeping the Rangers' roster at 40 players. Feigl has been assigned to the Double-A Frisco roster.
The 24-year-old Jenkins made his major league debut for Atlanta in 2016 and went 2-4 with a 5.88 ERA (34 ER/52.0 IP) in 14 games/8 starts. The right-hander spent the balance of the campaign with Gwinnett, going 9-3 with a 2.47 ERA (23 ER/83.2 IP) over 17 games/12 starts. He was acquired by Atlanta, along with pitcher Shelby Miller, in exchange for outfielder Jason Heyward in November 2014 and was named Atlanta's Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2015. Jenkins was born in Henderson, Texas and graduated from Henderson High School in 2010, where he was a four-sport star in baseball, football, basketball, and track. He was originally signed by the St. Louis Cardinals after being selected in the supplemental first round (50th overall) of the 2010 June draft, forgoing an offer to play quarterback at Baylor University.
Feigl, who turns 26 on December 27, spent the entire 2016 season on the disabled list at Triple-A Gwinnett. The left-hander posted 6.0 scoreless relief innings in 6 rehab appearances between the Gulf Coast League Braves and short-season Danville as he continued to recover from 'Tommy John' ligament replacement surgery his left elbow on April 21, 2015. Feigl was signed by the Braves as a non-drafted free agent on November 14, 2013 and was tabbed by Baseball America as Atlanta's 25th-best prospect entering 2016. The Mount St. Mary's (MD) University product has compiled a 2.74 ERA in 72.1 career innings in the minor leagues.
Jackson, 25, has pitched for the Rangers in each of the last two seasons, and he has an 8.50 ERA (17 ER/18.0 IP) over 15 career relief appearances in the major leagues. He was selected by Texas in the supplemental first round (45th overall) of the 2010 June draft.
