ARLINGTON -- Rangers first baseman Mike Napoli and outfielder Carlos Gomez came off the disabled list on Friday and went into the lineup against Mariners left-hander James Paxton.
Pitcher Tyson Ross was also activated off the DL and left-hander Dario Alvarez was called up from Triple-A Round Rock.
To make room for those four players, the Rangers optioned infielders Ryan Rua and Jurickson Profar to Round Rock, placed pitcher Tony Barnette on the 10-day DL with a sprained ring finger on his right hand and designated pitcher Dillon Gee for assignment.
Barnette jammed the finger a few days ago, but also admitted his performance dictated a move. He has a 7.23 ERA and opponents are hitting .326 off him.
"My command has suffered," Barnette said. "I'm going to take this opportunity to right the ship. Even before the finger, my performance was lacking. I'm not pointing the finger at anybody else. I'm pointing the finger at myself and starting over."
The Rangers want Profar to go back to Triple-A and play every day. They also want Rua to start getting consistent at-bats. His playing time was limited with the Rangers, and he was hitting .201 in 45 games.
"Ryan is a huge part of this ballclub," manager Jeff Banister said. "It was more of a situation of Ryan not playing consistently. This is an opportunity to get consistent at-bats. Who is to say what will happen in the next 5-10 days?"
Joey Gallo was not in the lineup on Friday with the return of Napoli and a left-hander on the mound for the Mariners. Gallo is expected to still get regular playing time, but he will likely rotate between first, third and left field. He can also serve as the designated hitter if needed.
Gallo has started in left, but the Rangers also need to find a spot for Delino DeShields now that Gomez is back. DeShields is hitting .287 with a .349 on-base percentage, and the Rangers are 24-19 when he is in the lineup.
"He's making it challenging for us," Banister said.
This is the first time all season Banister has had a full roster of heathy position players. That will require daily intrigue and juggling of the lineup, but Banister said the extra depth will allow him to get his veteran players time off or use them at DH.
"We want to make sure a lot of these guys are with us through July, August and September," Banister said.
• Infielder Hanser Alberto, who has been sidelined with right shoulder soreness, is expected to undergo surgery on Monday.
• The Rangers have seven days to trade, release or outright Gee to the Minors. He had a 4.15 ERA in four appearances.
• Banister said Austin Bibens-Dirkx is likely to start on Monday against the Blue Jays, with Andrew Cashner going Tuesday. That also means Nick Martinez is back to pitching out of the bullpen.
