Rangers honor breast cancer survivor

ARLINGTON -- Fortunately for Sheila Taylor, her favorite color is pink.

Taylor, who has twice defeated breast cancer, was selected as the winner of the Rangers' Honorary Bat Girl contest and honored in a pregame ceremony Sunday. She visited with players before the Rangers' series finale against the Red Sox, including Geovany Soto, Leonys Martin and Michael Choice. Also part of the package were two tickets to Sunday's game and pink MLB merchandise.

"I feel like I stand for all the women in Texas who are battling this disease and hope I can do something to promote breast cancer awareness as the Rangers' Honorary Bat Girl," said Taylor. "It's a wonderful honor, especially on a day like Mother's Day. I tease my family that they got off easy because they didn't have to do much today. But it's wonderful to have something like this when you've been in the battle of your life two times."

Accompanying Taylor were her husband, Nate, 4-year-old daughter McKenzie and good friend, Devin. Taylor, whose mother-in-law died of breast cancer at the age of 46, serves on the Board of Directors for The Bridge Breast Network, an organization that provides medical care to women with breast cancer but no health insurance.

"Seeing everybody embrace this with the pink bats, the ribbons and pink everywhere," Taylor said. "It lets us know we're not alone in this battle."
