Rangers ink extension with Spring Training home

BOSTON -- The Rangers and the Royals have agreed to a seven-year contract extension with the city of Surprise, Ariz., in exchange for approximately $21.9 million of improvements in the Spring Training facility they have shared since 2003.

The deal was approved by the Surprise city council on Tuesday. The funds will be split evenly between the two teams. The Rangers are expected to use their share for major renovations to their clubhouse, including the weight and training room, as well as add a multipurpose conference room and media center.

"We've enjoyed the relationship with the city and the Royals," said Rangers general manager Jon Daniels. "Looking forward to the renovations and a continued partnership."

The Rangers and Royals had an agreement with Surprise to remain at the 132-acre site through 2022. The new deal adds seven more years to the lease and expires in January of 2030.

"We're thrilled to be a part of this agreement. Surprise is a terrific place to play and to have Spring Training and we're looking forward to many more years there," said Royals general manager Dayton Moore.
