Rangers inquired about Nationals' Moore

PITTSBURGH -- After losing Prince Fielder for the season because of a herniated disc in his neck, the Rangers are in need of a first baseman and they have inquired about Nationals first baseman/outfielder Tyler Moore, according to a baseball source.

The source indicated that nothing is serious and the Rangers have a long list of first basemen they have interest in. The Rangers are currently using Mitch Moreland at the position.

When given a chance to play, Moore can provide power and has proven to be above average with the glove at first. He is currently a backup first baseman and outfielder for Washington and was in the starting lineup Sunday in left field against the Pirates.

Moore was drafted in the 16th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft and went on to win the Nationals Minor League Player of the Year in 2010, when he hit .269 with 31 home runs and 111 RBIs for Class A Potomac.

Moore made his big league debut in 2012 and had his best season primarily as a backup outfielder, hitting .263 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs. This year, Moore is still coming off the bench and is 13-for-64 [.203] with three home runs and nine RBIs.
