Rangers make eight selections on day two of 2015 First-Year Player Draft

The Texas Rangers selected eight players on Day Two of the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Rounds three through 10 of the draft took place today. The rest of the draft, through round 40, will be completed on Wednesday beginning at 11:00 a.m. CDT.

Below is additional information on the club's selections today through the 10th round. The club will send out a final list at the conclusion of the draft tomorrow.

In rounds 3-10, the Rangers selected eight players. The eight players include five right-handed pitchers, two shortstops, and an outfielder. Texas selected seven college players and made one high school pick.

RHP MICHAEL MATUELLA (78th overall) - With the club's first pick of the day, Texas chose Matuella (mat-CHU-ell-uh) out of Duke University…the 6-foot-6, 220-pounder was ranked as the 23rd-best prospect (12th-best pitcher) by Baseball America, and ESPN.com listed him at 19th overall… earned preseason All-America recognition from Baseball America (1st team), D1Baseball.com and Perfect Game (3rd team)…Perfect Game named him the No. 1 college junior in its preseason top-100 list…went 1-1, 1.08 (3 ER/25.0 IP) in 6 starts for the Blue Devils in 2015, averaging 8.64 SO/9 IP before undergoing Tommy John Ligament Replacement Surgery in March...following his sophomore campaign, Matuella dealt with a back injury over the summer…Matuella accrued a 3.19 ERA (50 ER/141.0 IP) with a 1.19 WHIP over 39 appearances and 24 starts in his collegiate career…emerged in 2014, recording a 10.6 SO/9 IP mark (69 SO/58.1 IP) and ranking 2nd on the Duke pitching staff with a 2.78 ERA (18 ER)…held opponents to a team-best .190 average, ranking 2nd in the ACC as one of just four starters in the league to hold opponents below .200 on the season…attended Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, Md., and was a 2012 Perfect Game Atlantic All-Region honorable mention selection.

RHP JAKE LEMOINE (108th overall) - The 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-hander was limited to 5 starts for the University of Houston this season due to a shoulder injury in mid-March…went 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA (12 ER/24.0 IP) in the 5 starts…Lemoine was named to USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team last summer, appearing in 5 games/4 starts with the club…was a Second Team All-American Conference selection as a sophomore, going 6-8 with a 2.87 ERA (34 ER/106.2 IP) and 87 strikeouts…was also selected by the Rangers in the 21st round of the 2012 draft out of Bridge City High School.

OF CHAD SMITH (138th overall) - The 6-foot-2, 200-pound outfielder out of South Gwinnett High School in Snellville, Ga., is the sixth-youngest position player in the draft at 17 years, 252 days…listed just outside of Baseball America's top-50 outfield prospects and is ranked at No. 196 in the publication's Top-200 Prospects list (99th among position players)…Baseball America also tabbed him the 13th-best prospect in the state of Georgia…two-time 2015 Georgia 6A All-Region 8 first-team selection…2015 Perfect Game 2nd Team All-American and Southeast All-Region 1st Team…hit .340 with 2 HR, 30 RBI and 10 stolen bases during his junior campaign, going 3-3 with a 3.50 ERA (12 ER/31.0 IP) and 9.6 SO/9 IP (33 SO)...committed to the University of Georgia this past fall.

RHP TYLER FERGUSON (168th overall) - The 21-year-old right-hander appeared in 15 games/3 starts with Vanderbilt as a junior, going 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA (14 ER/20.0 IP) and 24 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .180 average (11-61)…he struck out the side in a scoreless inning on June 1 vs. Radford in the NCAA Regional championship…he was tabbed the 191st-best prospect in the draft by Baseball America…as a sophomore, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Ferguson was 8-4 with a 2.69 ERA (23 ER/77.0 IP) and 65 strikeouts in 17 games/15 starts for the Commodores...Ferguson has received several academic honors, including 2014 Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll…he graduated from Clovis West (CA) High School, where he was a Second Team All-State pick in 2012…was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 40th round of the 2012 draft.

SS DYLAN MOORE (198th overall) - The 6-foot-4, 194-pounder was selected with the Rangers' 7th pick of the draft…the Central Florida senior posted a .323/.401/.471 slash line over 112 career games with the Knights, earning All-AAC Second Team accolades during his junior campaign…hit .333/.417/.542 as a senior, recording 25 extra-base hits (10 HR) and ranked among AAC leaders in hits (3rd, 80), AB (2nd, 240), RBI (T3rd, 45), runs (4th, 50), XBH (5th), BA (6th), SLG (6th), HR (7th) and OBP (7th)… received the Perfect Game College Summer League All-American distinction during his junior year…hit .375 with 33 RBI and 35 runs scored to earn MVP honors from the Calif. Collegiate League while leading the LA Brewers to the league title…transferred from Cypress College (CA) after his sophomore season, where he led the Chargers to the CCCAA State Championship while hitting .273 with 22 RBI, 34 runs scored and 22 stolen bases…hit .446 with 10 RBI, 26 runs scored and nine stolen bases in 30 games during his senior season at El Dorado HS.

RHP BLAKE BASS (228th overall) - The 22-year-old was a Lone Star Conference First Team selection as a senior at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas…Bass went 10-3 with a 2.22 ERA (26 ER/105.1 IP), 3 complete games, a shutout, and 106 strikeouts in 17 games/starts as a senior for the Rams…Baseball America named Bass the 3rd-best professional prospect in Division 2 this season…the 6-foot-7, 250-pound Bass began his college career as a first baseman at Texas Tech University…the right-hander earned District 2-5A MVP honors and was a Class 5A All-State selection as a senior at Lubbock Coronado High School.

RHP PETER FAIRBANKS (258th overall) - The 6-foot-6, 225-pound right hander out of the University of Missouri posted a team-leading 3.40 ERA (29 ER/76.2 IP) in 15 games/starts in 2015…averaged 9.3 SO/9 IP during his junior campaign …the 21-year-old logged the third-most innings on the Tigers staff, holding opponents to a .253 average…limited opponents to 3 ER-or-fewer in each of his first 12 starts in 2015...was a 1st-team All-Conference infielder for Webster Groves HS in 2012, hitting .393 with 6 HR and 21 RBI as a senior…two-time second-team All-Conference pitcher (2009, 10), also earning the honor as an outfielder in the same seasons…All-State basketball honoree by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association in 2012.

SS LEON BYRD (288th overall) - The 21-year-old infielder played in 51 games for the Owls as a junior, ranking among the team leaders in RBI (2nd, 35), doubles (T2nd, 12), and runs (3rd, 32)…in 2013, Byrd was NCAA All-Regional and Conference USA All-Tournament…was selected by the New York Mets in the 25th round of the 2012 draft out of Cypress Ranch High School, just west of Houston…helped lead Cy Ranch to the 5A state championship as a senior.
