Recall RHP Jon Edwards And Purchase Contract of Outfielder Carlos Peguero from Triple-A Round Rock

Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced this afternoon the following roster moves:

  • LHP Derek Holland placed on 60-day disabled list with subscapular strain in right shoulder
  • OF Ryan Rua placed on 15-day disabled list with right ankle sprain
  • OF Carlos Peguero (#43) contract purchased from Triple-A Round Rock
  • RHP Jon Edwards (#36) recalled from Triple-A Round Rock

Holland left yesterday's home opening game against the Astros, his first outing of the season, after 1.0 inning due to his injury. He is not expected to throw for 4 weeks and the first date he would be eligible to return from the disabled list is June 10.

Rua suffered his ankle injury while fielding a ball in left field during yesterday's game against Houston. The first date he would be eligible to return is April 26. He started each of the Rangers' first 5 games this season in left field and has a .235 (4-17) average with a double, walk, and run scored.

Peguero, 28, was in Rangers spring training camp as a non-roster invitee, batting .340 (16-47) with a home run, 5 doubles, and 5 RBI in 21 Cactus League games. He was reassigned to minor league camp on April 1 and opened the season with Triple-A Round Rock, going 4-for-6 with a double, triple, walk, and 2 runs scored in the Express' first 2 contests at Oklahoma City on Thursday and Friday. Peguero has seen major league action in each of the last 4 seasons with Seattle (2011-12-13) and Kansas City (2014).

Edwards, 27, was optioned to Round Rock on April 4 at the end of spring training. He had no record and a 2.92 ERA (4 ER/12.1 IP) over 10 games/1 starts in Cactus League play this spring, holding opponents to a .167 (7-42) average with 5 walks and 18 strikeouts. He pitched in Round Rock's season opener on Thursday at Oklahoma City, earning a save with a scoreless 9th inning to finish a combined 2-0 shutout win (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 20 pitches/11 strikes). A converted outfielder, Edwards made his major league debut with the Rangers last season, posting no record with a 4.32 ERA (4 ER/8.1 IP) in 9 relief appearances.

With these moves, along with the transactions earlier today involving Stolmy Pimentel (received on waiver claim from Pittsburgh) and Lisalverto Bonilla (transferred from 15- to 60-day disabled list), the Rangers now have a full 40-man roster plus 7 players on the 60-day disabled list.
