The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has placed right-handed pitcher Andrew Cashner on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to June 15, with a left oblique strain. The club has also purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Ernesto Frieri (#49) from Triple-A Round Rock. To make room on the 40-man roster for Frieri, the team has designated outfielder Peter O'Brien for assignment.

Cashner last pitched on June 14 at Houston, and the first date he would be eligible to return is June 25. He has gone 3-6 with a 3.50 ERA (27 ER/69.1 IP) in 12 games/starts for Texas this season, and ranks second on the staff in ERA (13th in A.L.) and quality starts (7).

Frieri, 31, has made one appearance with Round Rock since signing a minor league contract with the Rangers on June 6, pitching on Thursday at New Orleans: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 18 pitches/13 strikes. Overall at the Triple-A level this season with Scranton/Wilkes/Barre (NYY) and Round Rock, he has gone 2-0 with 7 saves, a 3.27 ERA (7 ER/22.0 IP), and 1.045 WHIP figure. Opponents have batted .177 (14-79) with 3 home runs, 9 walks, and 26 strikeouts against Frieri in the minor leagues in 2017.

Frieri began the year in the Yankees organization before exercising an opt out in his contract on June 2. He made one relief appearance for Team Columbia in the World Baseball Classic, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings on March 12 vs. the Dominican Republic. He will be seeking his first major league action since a relief outing with Tampa Bay on June 1, 2015 in Anaheim, and he has a career major league record of 11-13 with 73 saves and a 3.55 ERA in 298 relief outings with San Diego (2009-12), Los Angeles-AL (2012-14), Pittsburgh (2014), and Tampa Bay (2015).

The Rangers have seven days to trade, release, or outright O'Brien to the minor leagues. O'Brien was received from Cincinnati in a May 27 waiver claim and has combined to bat .164 (10-61) with 2 home runs and 8 RBI in 16 games with Round Rock and Frisco (AA).

After today's transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club's major league roster, along with four players on the 60-day disabled list.
