Rangers Place RHP Nick Martinez on 15-Day Disabled List, Recall RHP Phil Irwin from Triple-A Round Rock

Irwin scheduled to start tonight vs. Houston in his Texas debut

Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has placed right-handed pitcher Nick Martinez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 2, with discomfort in his left side. The club has also recalled right-handed pitcher Phil Irwin (#47) from Triple-A Round Rock.

Martinez has gone 1-6 with a 5.10 ERA (38 ER/67.0 IP) over 16 games/11 starts for the Rangers this season in his first major league action. He has made 9 straight starts since re-joining the rotation in mid-May and last pitched on July 1 at Baltimore. The first date he would be eligible to return is July 17, which is an off day before the Rangers begin play after the All-Star break.

Irwin, 27, is scheduled to start tonight's game against Houston in his Rangers debut. It will be just his second major league appearance, the other a start for Pittsburgh on April 13, 2013 vs. Cincinnati (ND, 4.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R-4 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO, 0 HR). Irwin has gone 4-1 with a 2.41 ERA (9 ER/33.2 IP) in 7 games/6 starts with Round Rock since he was received from Pittsburgh on a waiver claim on May 28. He went 4-0 with a 1.23 ERA (4 ER/29.1 IP) and 32 strikeouts over his last 5 starts with the Express.

The Rangers have 39 players on the club's 40-man roster.
