Cordell to be sidelined with ankle sprain

March 18th, 2016

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Outfielder Ryan Cordell will be sidelined for at least a few days with a sprained right ankle. Cordell injured the ankle in batting practice earlier this week and aggravated it on Thursday night trying to beat out an infield hit.
"I just hit the bag wrong," Cordell said. "It's not bad. I'll take a few days and be all right."
The injury comes while Cordell was having a productive camp. He was not expected to make the team, but he is getting noticed. He is 6-for-19 (.316) at the plate and playing good defense in the outfield.

Cordell, an 11th-round pick out of Liberty University in 2013, can play all three outfield positions, but he has also been used at third and short. He and Drew Robinson are the most versatile players still in camp.
"It's good to get some face time with [manager Jeff Banister], the other big league coaches and the other players," said Cordell, the Rangers' No. 15 prospect. "Let them know who I am, how I play and how I go about my business."

Worth noting:
• First baseman Ike Davis is in camp on a Minor League contract but was out of the lineup for the 10th straight day with a sprained right knee. Davis, a left-handed hitter, was 4-for-8 in his first four games but hasn't played since March 8. Davis was signed as insurance against injury, but his physical issues are already making his long-shot chances of being on the Opening Day roster even longer.
• Pitcher Anthony Ranaudo was scratched from Friday's start with mild back spasms. The Rangers had no pitchers from big league camp pitching in the Cactus League game against the Mariners.
• Colby Lewis' son Preston celebrated his ninth birthday on Friday. He was born on March 18, 2007. That was the same day that Lewis was released by the Nationals. Lewis had just left Florida to be with his wife Jenny in California for the birth when he got the call from the Nationals.
• Shin-Soo Choo, who has been dealing with tightness in his back, is scheduled to play against the D-backs on Saturday.
