The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Nick Martinez from Triple-A Round Rock and placed right-handed pitcher Lucas Harrell on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain.
Martinez, 26, will be in his fourth stint with Texas this season, the others from April 16-24, June 14-July 8, and July 26-27. He has gone 1-3 with a 7.18 ERA (21 ER/26.1 IP) in 7 games/5 starts for the Rangers this season, taking the loss in his last outing with Texas on July 26 vs. Oakland (4.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R-ER). Martinez, who was scheduled to start for Round Rock tonight, will be available in the Rangers bullpen for Wednesday's series finale against Oakland. He has a career 0.98 ERA (2 ER/18.1 IP) in 10 relief appearances in the major leagues.
Martinez has spent the bulk of the season with Round Rock, posting a 7-6 record with a 4.06 ERA (42 ER/93.0 IP) in 16 games/15 starts, earning the win in his last outing on Friday at Salt Lake (7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R-ER, 1 BB, 6 SO, 1 HR, 100 pitches/66 strikes). He also made one start for Double-A Frisco on July 9.
Harrell suffered the right groin injury during the second inning of Tuesday's start against Oakland, but was able to finish the frame before his exit. The first date he would be eligible to return is September 1. He has gone 1-0 with a 5.60 ERA (11 ER/17.2 IP) in 4 games/starts for Texas since being acquired in a July 27 trade with Atlanta, and has an overall 3-2 record with a 4.21 ERA (22 ER/47.0 IP) in 9 games/starts for the Rangers and Braves in 2016.
Following these transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the major league roster.
