The Rangers optioned Choice on Thursday after recalling right-handed reliever Spencer Patton. Texas went with a six-man bullpen Wednesday and would have been extremely short-handed Thursday, seeing as Anthony Bass threw four innings of relief in Wednesday's 8-2 loss to the Athletics.

Shin-Soo Choo was back in the Rangers' lineup Thursday after missing the past two days with back spasms, but manager Jeff Banister said the team was planning to make the move regardless.

Choice went 0-for-1 with a strikeout and made a two-base error Wednesday in his only Major League game this season.

Patton has thrown three innings for the Rangers this season, allowing three earned runs. He has given up two home runs, but he also has four strikeouts. Patton has a 0.78 ERA in 22 relief appearances for Round Rock this season.

The Rangers called up Patton, but another option could have been former closer Neftali Feliz, who remains on a rehab assignment in Round Rock. Banister said the team is planning to let Feliz continue the process he is on before bringing him back to the Majors. Feliz was 1-2 with a 5.09 ERA and three blown saves in nine chances before going to the disabled list May 20. He has an 8.31 ERA in 8 2/3 innings in Triple-A.
