ARLINGTON -- The Rangers reinstated right-hander Shawn Tolleson from the MLB Family Medical Emergency list before Friday's game against the Mariners and optioned left-hander Alex Claudio to Triple-A Round Rock.
Tolleson was placed on the list on May 27 to spend time with his father, Mark, in Allen, Texas, who is dealing with colon cancer.
"This past week it's been nice to be home and be with my family," Tolleson said. "Mentally, physically, I feel refreshed and ready to go."
The 28-year-old right-hander threw live batting practice at Double-A Frisco on Tuesday and has been doing some flat-ground work as well. He was replaced as the team's closer on May 18 and has a 10.13 ERA through 16 innings this season.
"I'll never admit I needed a mental break, but it was nice. I feel refreshed," Tolleson said. 
Banister said the Rangers decided to stick with right-hander Luke Jackson in the bullpen over Claudio, pointing to Jackson's power fastball as an asset, which is 94.42 mph on average, according to Statcast™.
Claudio picked up the loss in the team's walk-off defeat to the Indians on Wednesday, and has made just six appearances since being recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on May 8.
"At this time, a tough decision for us," Banister said. "We just felt like, given the mix of pitchers that we have, we felt Luke was going to have an opportunity for success. That doesn't mean Claudio doesn't give us that chance, we just leaned more toward Luke."
Choo and Chirinos continue to rehab
Shin-Soo Choo was not able to fly to the Rangers' facility in Surprise, Ariz., on Thursday due to a plane malfunction, and will begin his rehab assignment Friday as the designated hitter for Double-A Frisco.
Choo will be Frisco's designated hitter Friday and Saturday, will then head to Triple-A Round Rock to play in the outfield on Monday and will come back to Frisco on Wednesday for another game in the outfield.
His plan is to return June 13 against the A's. He has been on the 15-day disabled list since May 23 due to a left hamstring strain.
Catcher Robinson Chirinos flew to Arizona on Thursday and was scheduled to catch in extended spring training games Friday and Saturday. He will then catch at Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday, serve as the designated hitter on Monday and catch again on Tuesday.
He is on track to return June 9, the first day he's eligible to return from the 60-day disabled list due to a right forearm fracture.
Worth noting
• Right-hander Mike Matuella is expected to be the Opening Day pitcher for Class-A Spokane on June 17 when the Northwest League opens. Matuella underwent Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery on April 10, 2015, and then was selected by the Rangers in the third round out of Duke in the 2015 Draft. Matuella could have been a high first-round pick if not for the elbow surgery and his rehabilitation program has gone "very well," according to farm director Mike Daly.
• Friday marked the beginning of 20 straight games for the Rangers without a day off. Banister said the Rangers might use a sixth starter somewhere in that stretch to give the rest of the rotation a day of rest. They could bring Cesar Ramos out of the bullpen or call up a pitcher from Triple-A. Veteran pitcher Kyle Lohse, who was signed to a Minor League contract last month, is one option. Lohse is 2-1 with a 6.23 ERA in four starts for Triple-A Round Rock.
