Mondesi, Bonifacio among 10 top prospect performers Friday

Two pairs of top prospects flashed their power on Friday, as Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Springfield squared off in a doubleheader.

Royals No. 1 prospect (No. 34 overall) Raul A. Mondesi launched a two-run shot in the first game, followed by a three-run homer from No. 9 prospect Jorge Bonifacio. But the combined effort wasn't enough, and Northwest Arkansas narrowly fell, 10-9, to Springfield.

The second contest wasn't much of one.

Cardinals No. 9 prospect Charlie Tilson and No. 17 prospect Patrick Wisdom both hit three-run homers as part of a nine-run fourth inning. The home team never looked back and easily dispatched the Naturals, 9-4, in the second game of the twin bill.

Wisdom has been on a bit of a tear lately. The third baseman has at least one RBI in five of his past six contests, including a two-homer game against Tulsa on June 15. He's hitting .256 with six homers and 33 RBIs on the season.

The rest of the 10 best performances from top Minor Leaguers Friday

• Cubs No. 15 prospect Mark Zagunis has one of the hottest bats in baseball. The Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach outfielder went 4-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs on Friday night and is now 9-for-12 with two dingers and seven RBIs over the past three games. His latest performance powered the Pelicans to a 7-4 win over Lynchburg and the 22-year-old is now batting .324, his highest average since May 22.

• D-backs No. 4 prospect (No. 83 overall) Touki Toussaint turned in a dominant performance for Class A Kane County, helping the Cougars top Peoria, 4-1. Toussaint, who turns 19 on Saturday, gave up just one hit and one walk while striking out five in six shutout innings, pushing his record to 2-2 with a 3.69 ERA since finishing up extended Spring Training in mid-May. The right-hander's outing was his best of the season. He hasn't given up more than one earned run in four of his seven starts this year.

• Indians No. 13 prospect Jesus Aguilar homered for the second straight night, leading Triple-A Columbus to a 4-1 victory over Durham. The designated hitter's solo shot in the fourth put the Clippers up 2-0 and proved to be all the cushion they would need. Aguilar has been hot recently, hitting in eight of nine games while driving in 10 runs over that span. On the year, he has nine dingers and 42 RBIs.

• Rays No. 5 prospect Casey Gillaspie hit his Midwest League-leading 16th homer of the year for Class A Bowling Green, a two-run shot that was the only offensive spark in a 5-2 loss to Fort Wayne. Gillaspie has been raking this month. Friday marked his seventh homer since June 4 and he has 44 RBIs on the year. Drafted in the first round last June, the first baseman has already sprinted past his 2014 totals (seven homers, 42 RBIs) in 10 fewer games.

• Reds No. 1 prospect (No. 19 overall) Robert Stephenson hit double-digit Ks for the third time this year. The Double-A Pensacola stud allowed three hits and two runs over seven innings and fanned 10 Mobile batters in a 4-2 win. Stephenson got the 'W,' and moved to 4-6 with a 3.73 ERA. The big game halted a two-game losing streak, during which he gave up five earned runs in 11 innings.

• Red Sox No. 4 prospect (No. 81 overall) Rafael Devers went 2-for-5 with a solo shot -- his second in three games -- for Class A Greenville. The third baseman is hitting .308/.338/.455 and his average hasn't dipped below .300 since April 22. The 6-foot, 195-pound infielder has shown some power, smacking 16 doubles, five homers and 32 RBIs this season.
