Rays announce Minor League staffs for 2014 season

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays have named their Minor League on-field coaching and medical training staffs for the 2014 season.

Chad Mottola highlights the changes as he joins Tampa Bay's staff in the role of hitting coordinator.

Mottola played parts of five seasons in the Major Leagues and will replace Matt Quatraro, who joined the Indians' Major League coaching staff. Mottola spent the 2013 season as the Blue Jays' hitting coach after serving in the same capacity at Triple-A Las Vegas in 2011-12. He joined the Blue Jays' organization as a coach in 2007.

Charlie Montoyo will begin his eighth season as manager of Triple-A Durham and his 17th managing in the Rays' organization. Last season, he led the Bulls to the postseason for the sixth time in seven seasons, capturing the Governor's Cup for the second time during his tenure. Montoyo enters the 2014 season 55 wins shy of Bill Evers' Bulls franchise record of 613 career managerial victories.

Durham pitching coach Neil Allen and hitting coach Dave Myers will return, as will athletic trainer Mike Sandoval. Conditioning coach Bryan King joins the Rays' organization after five seasons as the Blue Jays' Major League strength and conditioning coach.

Brady Williams will manage Double-A Montgomery after spending last season with Class A Advanced Charlotte and the previous three as the manager of Class A Bowling Green.

Pitching coach R.C. Lichtenstein and hitting coach Ozzie Timmons will return to the Biscuits, as will athletic trainer Kris Russell.

Jared Sandberg has been tabbed to manage Charlotte, which will be his seventh season in Tampa Bay's system in a coaching or managerial capacity. Sandberg managed Bowling Green last season, and prior to that, he managed Short-Season Hudson Valley for three seasons.

Pitching coach Steve Watson will begin his second stint with the Stone Crabs' staff after spending last season with Hudson Valley and the 2011-12 seasons in Charlotte. Coach Joe Szekely will return for 2014, as will athletic trainer Scott Thurston.

Michael Johns is the new manager at Bowling Green after spending last season with Hudson Valley and the previous three with Rookie-level Princeton; this will mark his seventh year in the Rays' organization. Pitching coach Bill Moloney will return to Bowling Green after spending last year with Charlotte, while coach Dan DeMent will join Bowling Green after serving the previous two years as a coach in Hudson Valley. Athletic trainer Nick Flynn also joins the Hot Rods' staff after spending the last two years with the Princeton Rays.

Hudson Valley will be managed by Tim Parenton, who begins his first year in Tampa Bay's organization after more than 20 years of coaching at the high school and college levels. He most recently spent four years as an assistant coach at the University of North Florida and previously held coaching positions at Old Dominion, Mississippi State, Samford, Florida and Jesuit (La.) High School.

Pitching coach Jorge Moncada will join the Renegades after spending the previous seven years with the Venezuelan Summer League Rays. Coach Manny Castillo will also join the Renegades after spending the previous four years in Bowling Green. Athletic trainer Brian Newman rejoins the staff, having spent the 2012 season with Hudson Valley before spending last season with the Gulf Coast League Rays (Rookie).

The Princeton Rays (Rookie) will again be managed by Danny Sheaffer, who begins his second year in the Rays' organization and 34th season in professional baseball. Pitching coach Jose Gonzalez will begin his first season with Princeton after spending the previous three years with the Dominican Summer League Rays, and coach Reinaldo Ruiz will return for his third season with Princeton. James Ramsdell will take over as Princeton's athletic trainer after serving as an intern in Port Charlotte last season.

Jim Morrison will manage the GCL club, marking his eighth season managing in Tampa Bay's organization and second with the GCL Rays. Pitching coach Marty DeMerritt, hitting coach Hector Torres and coach Wuarnner Rincones all will return to the GCL club. Athletic trainer Jeremy Spencer will join the GCL staff after previously serving as the trainer with the Renegades (2011, '13) and Hot Rods ('12).
