Asdrubal ejected after bat slam on strikeout
Rays shortstop tossed in 5th inning against Blue Jays
ST. PETERSBURG -- Rays shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera was ejected from Monday night's game -- an 8-5 victory for the Blue Jays -- in the fifth inning for arguing balls and strikes.
After falling behind in the count, 0-2, Cabrera watched the third pitch of his at-bat and plate umpire Kerwin Danley called him out on strikes. Cabrera slammed his bat on the ground and had a few words with the ump before being tossed.
"[Cabrera] disagreed with the strike zone," Rays manager Kevin Cash said after the game.
Cabrera's ejection is the first by a Rays player this season -- manager Kevin Cash has been ejected twice and hitting coach Derek Shelton once. It's the fourth ejection of Cabrera's career, the last one coming on Oct. 4 in Game 2 of the National League Division Series when he played for the Nationals.
Nick Franklin took over at shortstop for Cabrera, who was not the only player to voice words about the strike zone. Steven Souza Jr. also had an exchange with Danley after being called out on strikes in the eighth inning. In total, seven Rays struck out looking Monday.
