LOS ANGELES -- Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings played in his first rehab game Tuesday, as he works his way back from a hamstring strain sustained on June 30.
Jennings batted leadoff as the DH for Class A Advanced Charlotte and finished 1-for-4 with a strikeout against Jupiter. Barring any setbacks, Rays manager Kevin Cash hopes to have Jennings back early next week when Tampa Bay hosts Kansas City.
Brad Boxberger made the first of his back-to-back appearances Tuesday for Charlotte. He's played in just one game for the Rays this season, and has been out since June 1 with an oblique strain.
Boxberger logged 18 pitches in a scoreless first inning for the Stone Crabs. Cash said the American League's 2015 saves leader will pitch again Wednesday for an out or two, with the hope that he'll be activated when the Rays return home Friday.
Alex Cobb threw 35 pitches in a bullpen session Tuesday in Florida. Cobb paused his rehab from Tommy John surgery after two appearances for Charlotte. If he feels good Wednesday, he'll likely make a rehab start Friday.
Chase Whitley will throw a bullpen session Wednesday and make his third rehab appearance for Charlotte. He's pitched one and two innings in his first two appearances, respectively.
