BALTIMORE -- Saturday night's Rays-Orioles game was postponed due to bad weather.
"I think ultimately, we can't predict the way the wind is going to affect everything," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "And the wind changed a little bit. Brought that storm in at 7:40. But when you're in this area this time of year, the weather gets a little unpredictable."
The news came at approximately 8 p.m. ET, after the Orioles tried twice to start and had to tarp the field. The Nationals postponed their game nearby, while Double-A Bowie also called their game early, but the Orioles were optimistic they'd be able to get the game in.
Cash felt as though the situation was handled properly.
"They wanted to play," Cash said. "And we just kind of waited for the weather and it didn't work out. I don't think it should have been handled any differently."
Drew Smyly, who had a full warmup in advance of making his scheduled start Saturday night, will now start Wednesday night against the Indians.
Jake Odorizzi will start Sunday as planned. After Monday's off-day, Matt Moore will start the opening game of the Rays' series against the Indians at Tropicana Field. Chris Archer will be pushed back a day to start on Thursday afternoon against Cleveland.
No makeup date has been announced. Fans are encouraged to exchange their tickets for Sunday's game, beginning at 1:35 p.m. ET when the Orioles host the Rays.
Rays regular-season tickets
If fans wish to attend Sunday's contest, they will need to exchange their tickets from Saturday night's game at the Oriole Park Box Office. Box office windows will be open at 11 a.m. Sunday morning.
Fans unable to attend Sunday's game are encouraged to keep their tickets until a makeup date is announced. If fans cannot attend the makeup date, Saturday night's tickets can be exchanged for any remaining Orioles home game this season on a dollar-for-dollar basis. All exchanges are subject to availability and must be completed by June 25. Complimentary tickets are non-exchangeable. StubHub tickets are also non-exchangeable and must either be used for the makeup date or resold on StubHub once a makeup date is determined.
