Andriese going to DL with stress reaction in hip

Rays right-hander exits after throwing one inning Saturday vs. A's

June 10th, 2017

ST. PETERSBURG -- Following Sunday's 5-4 win over the A's, manager Kevin Cash said the Rays intended to place right-hander on the disabled list. The decision was made on Monday, when the team said, on an off-day, that Andriese will be placed on the 10-day disabled list on Tuesday with a right hip stress reaction, retroactive to Sunday. Andriese went for an MRI on Sunday.
"Very frustrating," Andriese said after Saturday's early exit. "At this point, just have to fix it and get healthy."
To take Andriese's place on the roster, right-hander will be recalled from Triple-A Durham to start Tuesday night in Toronto. The rest of the rotation will be pushed back a day, with Jake Odorizzi starting on Wednesday.
Andriese will refrain from baseball activity for a few weeks as he recovers, then will build back up to get fully stretched out. The best-case scenario would be a mid-August return. There is no fracture and no surgery is needed; he just needs to let it heal.
Andriese said he began to feel something on the last pitch of the first inning on Saturday. He then left the game after throwing his warmup pitches prior to the second inning. Andriese allowed one run on three hits while striking out one in the first, throwing 21 pitches in the frame.
Andriese was activated off the 10-day disabled list prior to his start. The right-hander last pitched on May 30 at Texas, and he had to leave the game in the second inning, also due to a strained groin.
"It was the same feeling," Andriese said. "I hadn't felt it all week. We went through the rehab process and all good. Nothing. Was going at it 100 percent and didn't feel it at warmups, nothing. And then, the last pitch on the changeup of the first inning, I felt it walking off the mound.
"I mean, I felt it on the pitch, but after I walked off the mound and got the out. I was kind of stretching it in between innings. Honestly hoping that it would correct itself. I went back out there to throw a warmup pitch and I felt it. I couldn't push off it at all."
