Rays place Jaso on DL, name Geltz Friday's starter

Tampa Bay recalls outfield prospect Mahtook

ST. PETERSBURG -- Reliever Steve Geltz will start Friday night's game against the Marlins, John Jaso has been placed on the disabled list and No. 14 prospect Mikie Mahtook has been recalled.

That news came late Thurday as the Rays readied for their first road game of the series in Miami.

Jaso left Monday's opener against the Orioles due to a left wrist contusion. He had been listed as day to day until Thursday night's news.

Mahtook will join the team and make his Major League debut. With James Loney going on the DL on Wednesday, the Rays could not afford to be short on the offensive side while waiting for Jaso's condition to improve.

Most figured Friday night's start would come down to a choice between Erasmo Ramirez and Matt Andriese. Starting Geltz gives the appearance that the Rays will go with an all-hands-on-deck situation Friday night while the team tries to get through a trying period with starters Alex Cobb, Drew Smyly, Alex Colome and Matt Moore all on the disabled list.
