Rays sign second-round draft pick Cameron Varga

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.-The Tampa Bay Rays have signed right-handed pitcher Cameron Varga, their second round selection from the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft and the No. 60 pick overall.

Varga, 19, compiled a 10-0 record with 141 strikeouts to 6 walks in 58 innings pitched while not allowing an earned run as a senior at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy. He finished with eight shutouts on the season including five no-hitters, the fifth of which came in the Ohio High School Athletic Association's Division III State Semifinals (15 SO, 1 BB) on the day he was drafted.

En route to earning 2014 Gatorade Ohio Baseball Player of the Year honors, Varga set a national record this season by striking out 33 consecutive batters, surpassing the previous record of 22 set in 1973. He was also named the Division III state coaches' association player of the year after leading Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy to the Division III state final where it finished as runners-up.

Varga had previously committed to play at the University of North Carolina as a pitcher.
