Rays still concerned about Ramirez's groin injury

CLEVELAND -- The condition of Erasmo Ramirez's strained right groin remained a concern on Sunday, a day after the right-hander had to leave the game in the fourth inning of his Saturday night start.

"Erasmo came in today feeling pretty good, so that's a good sign," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "We still don't know how we'll shape the rotation going forward. We're pretty committed to Matty [Andriese], Arch [Chris Archer] and [Nate] Karns to start the homestand. We have the off-day then there will be a lot of discussion where [Ramirez is at], how many days or how much time Erasmo will miss."

Ramirez planned to ride the stationary bike on Sunday and he will throw on Monday -- but not from a mound. He emphasized that the critical point will come when he steps on the mound to throw his bullpen session on Tuesday.

"We will know a lot more after that," said Ramirez, noting that stretching out his leg while following the downhill path off the mound will test the injury.

"I feel way better today," Ramirez said. "I think the way that they got me out of the game [Saturday night] was a smart decision. They got me out at the right time."

Because of the off-day, putting Ramirez at the back end of the rotation remains a possibility if the Rays feel the extra days will be enough to get him ready to make his next start. Putting Ramirez on the disabled list also looms as a possibility.
