ST. PETERSBURG -- Timothy Beckham was hit in the left hand by a Scott Feldman pitch in the fourth inning of Monday's 7-3 loss to the Reds. Beckham stayed in the game initially, but was replaced by Taylor Featherston after the inning.
X-rays on Beckham's hand came back negative, the Rays announced. He is day-to-day with a left-hand contusion.
"We're fortunate that the X-rays were negative," manager Kevin Cash said. "That'd be a pretty big blow."
Feldman's 0-1 sinker ran too far inside and clipped the edge of Beckham's left hand near the knob of the bat. Beckham, who said he had never been hit on the hand by a pitch, immediately dropped the bat and hopped in the direction of the third-base dugout to collect himself.
"I definitely thought it was worse when it first happened," Beckham said. "I never like coming out of the game, but I couldn't hardly squeeze my glove, so I knew I wasn't going to be able to swing a bat."
Trainers took a long look at Beckham before allowing him to head to first base, where he could still utilize his foot speed. The hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for the Rays in a then-scoreless game before Trevor Plouffe grounded out with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Featherston took over at second base to start the fifth, with Daniel Robertson moving to shortstop. Robertson played three games at shortstop last week while Beckham rested a sore right knee.
