Mets' hot bats produce more back-to-back jacks

MIAMI -- Mets shortstop Wilmer Flores started it the last time he and catcher Travis d'Arnaud hit back-to-back homers on Aug. 24 in Philadelphia. But d'Arnaud hit the first one this time in Saturday night's 7-0 win at Marlins Park, as they paced another strong night for a Mets offense that has scored 115 runs in the past 15 games (7.67 runs per game).

"That was huge," manager Terry Collins said. "[d'Arnaud's] ball was absolutely crushed, too. It was big for us. I think it really woke us up a little bit."

With two outs and two on in the first inning, d'Arnaud -- batting fifth -- launched his 10th homer of the year, which landed a projected 412 feet away from home plate and traveled at 106 mph, according to Statcast™. On the next pitch, Flores launched his 15th home run of the season (409 feet at 100 mph, according to Statcast™) to give New York a 4-0 lead.

The consecutive blasts -- which both came off of Marlins lefty Brad Hand, who lasted just 1 2/3 innings -- marked the eighth time the Mets have hit back-to-back homers this season. Meanwhile, it was their first time doing so since d'Arnaud and Flores did it less than two weeks ago in Philadelphia.

"I heard the dugout go crazy once I hit it," said d'Arnaud, who finished 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBIs. "I was fortunate to just put a good swing on it and keep my eye on the baseball."

Center fielder Juan Lagares -- who went 2-for-5 with two RBIs -- followed suit in the second inning with his sixth homer of the season. David Wright picked up two hits, as well.

Trying to hold off Washington in the National League East race, New York has scored 29 runs in four September games. Additionally, since Aug. 21, the Mets have scored fewer than five runs just three times in 15 contests.

"It was nice to get an early lead," d'Arnaud said. "We all had the good momentum and went out there and just tried to win."
