The Boston Red Sox today acquired infielder/outfielder Michael Martinez from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for cash considerations.
 
To make room for Martinez on the 40-man roster, infielder Sean Coyle was designated for assignment.
 
President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.
 
Martinez, 33, hit .283 (17-for-60) with three doubles and a home run in 32 games for the Indians this season, making five starts in right field, three in center field, two at second base, one at third base, and one in left field prior to being designated for assignment on July 2. Originally signed by the Washington Nationals as a non-drafted free agent in 2005, the switch-hitter has batted .199 (98-for-493) in 236 major league games (115 starts) while appearing at six defensive positions for the Philadelphia Phillies (2011-13), Pittsburgh Pirates (2014), and Indians (2015-16). Martinez has recorded five assists and four double plays in 81 games (37 starts) as an outfielder and has also played second base (48 games, 29 starts), third base (41 games, 33 starts), and shortstop (24 games, 16 starts).
 
A native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Martinez has also appeared in 875 minor league games over 11 seasons (2006-16), batting .268 (834-for-3,108) with 111 stolen bases, 149 doubles, 43 triples, and 33 home runs. He has spent most of his minor league career playing second base (401 starts) and shortstop (313 starts), also appearing defensively at third base (18 starts) and in center field (75 starts), right field (five starts), and left field (three starts).
