Red Sox activate outfielder Chris Young from 15-day disabled list

Prior to tonight's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox outfielder Chris Young was returned from his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket and activated from the 15-day disabled list. To make room on the 25-man roster, the club optioned left-handed pitcher Henry Owens to Pawtucket following yesterday's game against the Detroit Tigers.

Prior to tonight's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox outfielder Chris Young was returned from his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket and activated from the 15-day disabled list. To make room on the 25-man roster, the club optioned left-handed pitcher Henry Owens to Pawtucket following yesterday's game against the Detroit Tigers.

Young, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 24 with a right hamstring strain, played in seven rehab games with the PawSox, going 5-for-23 (.217) with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored in four starts in left field and three at designated hitter. In his first season with the Red Sox since being signed as a free agent on December 2, 2015, the 32-year-old has hit .277 (36-for-130) with 12 doubles, six home runs, 15 RBI, and a .508 slugging percentage over 48 games (33 starts). He has posted a 1.042 OPS against left-handed pitchers, going 16-for-47 (.340) with eight doubles and two home runs. In his major league career, the 11-year veteran has hit .237 (1,013-for-4,281) with 608 runs, 268 doubles, 21 triples, 175 home runs, 543 RBI, and 135 stolen bases over 1,291 games with the Diamondbacks (2006-12), Athletics (2013), Mets (2014), Yankees (2014-15), and Red Sox (2016). 
Owens, 24, has made four major league starts this season, going 0-1 with a 7.79 ERA (15 ER/17.1 IP). The left-hander is also 8-6 with a 3.70 ERA (49 ER/119.1 IP) and a .219 opponent batting average in 21 starts with the PawSox, striking out 116 batters and walking 74. In three August starts for Pawtucket, he is 2-1 with a 1.00 ERA (2 ER/18.0 IP) and 20 strikeouts, most recently earning the win on August 15 at Lehigh Valley after surrendering only one run in 7.0 innings with six strikeouts and one walk. Selected by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2011 June Draft, Owens is 4-5 with a 5.27 ERA (47 ER/80.1 IP) and 65 strikeouts in 15 starts over three major league stints, and 51-30 with a 3.38 ERA (239 ER/637.1 IP) and 688 strikeouts in 117 minor league games (116 starts).
