Red Sox activate outfielder Shane Victorino from 15-day disabled list

Right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today activated outfielder Shane Victorino from the 15-day disabled list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket following last night's game. Victorino is starting in right field in tonight's game against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park beginning at 7:10 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Victorino, 33, was placed on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain prior to the Red Sox' season opener on March 31 (retroactive to March 30). Over a three-game rehabilitation stint with Pawtucket, he went 1-for-11 at the plate and played 20.0 innings defensively, all in right field. In 2013, his first season with the Red Sox, Victorino hit .294 with 26 doubles, two triples, 15 home runs, 61 RBI, and 21 stolen bases in 122 regular season games between right field (110 games, 106 starts) and center field (15 games, 11 starts). He started 14 games during the 2013 postseason and drove in the game-winning run in all three series-clinching victories. The two-time All-Star and four-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner owns a .277 batting average (1,200-for-4,827), 221 doubles, 67 triples, 105 home runs, 470 RBI, and 222 stolen bases in 1,198 games over 10 major league seasons (2003, 2005-13).

Wilson, 27, was recalled from Pawtucket yesterday but did not pitch in last night's game. He returns to the PawSox, where he has gone 0-0 with one save and 8.0 scoreless innings over eight appearances this season, all in relief, allowing four hits and five walks (1 intentional) with nine strikeouts. Last year, Wilson made his major league debut with 26 games over three stints with the Red Sox, going 1-1 with a 4.88 ERA and 22 strikeouts compared to 14 walks.
